Communion

WHO SHOULD COMMUNE AT HOLY CROSS?

Since Christ is truly present in this meal, Scripture teaches us to “examine ourselves” before participating in His body and blood (1 Corinthians 10:16-17). Those who commune at this altar should be:
1. Baptized into the name of the Father, Son,  and Holy Spirit,
2. Taught and trusting in the essentials of the Christian faith (“confirmed”),
3. In a healthy discipleship relationship with Holy Cross or another church  within the Lutheran Church  – Missouri Synod  (LCMS). Please don’t hesitate to speak with one of our pastors if you have any questions – we are eager to welcome you to this meal!

I’M NEW AND DESIRE TO COMMUNE. HOW DO I PREPARE?

If you do not regularly commune at another LCMS church:
First, speak with one of our pastors. We look forward to meeting you!
Second, learn the faith we confess. Since communion is a public confession of our shared faith, it’s important that we share agreement on essential Christian teaching. We invite all who desire to commune at Holy Cross to participate in one of our Essentials Group. These groups are offered multiple times each year for those who desire communion and membership at Holy Cross.
Third, be publicly received into membership through  the Rite of Confirmation. This is an opportunity for youth and adults to be welcomed into our communion and commit themselves to a life

of worship, growth, and service in God’s church.

WHAT IF I’M NOT READY TO TAKE COMMUNION?

First, know  that you  are welcome here! Not everyone at Holy Cross communes, and no one should feel pressure to participate. You will notice that our children and some adults do not commune because they are still learning the faith. You are welcome to either remain in the pews and sing, or come to the altar with crossed arms or clasped hands. This indicates to the pastor or elder that you desire a blessing instead of communion.

QUESTION FOR SELF-EXAMINATION BEFORE COMMUNION

Do I believe I am a sinner in need of God’s forgiveness?

Am I reconciled with other Christians in this community?

Do I trust in Jesus Christ as the only source of forgiveness, life, and salvation? Do I believe that in the bread and cup I truly receive the body and blood of Jesus Christ?

Do I intend, with God’s help, to keep His commandments and be in fellowship with this congregation or one of the same confession?
